Bjorn Ironside is a Viking warrior, leader and explorer, who famously lived during the ninth century.

He is mentioned in the historical text Tale of Ragnar's sons, which the series Vikings is based upon, and other Norse sources and poetry.

The Tale of Ragnar’s Sons combines legend, myth and some historical fact, so what we know about Ironside and his family may not be entirely accurate.

Bjorn is believed to be the son of Scandinavian King Ragnar Lodbrok/Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland).

Bjorn was a powerful naval commander and in 860 led a large Viking raid across the Mediterranean, raiding the Iberian coast, Gibraltar, the South of France, Pisa, Luni, Sicily and North Africa.

Alongside his brothers, Hvitserk, Ivar the Boneless (Alexander Hogh Andersen) and Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye (David Lindström), he ravaged West Francia, Paris and Anglo-Saxon Engalnd.

Upon their return to Scandinavia, the sons of Ragnar divided the Scandinavian kingdom, and Ironside ruled Uppsala and Sweden.

He is believed to have died of old age or illness a rich man– not in battle or at the hands of his brother Ivar.

In the season six midseason finale, Bjorn Ironside appeared to be stabbed Ivar, his brother and enemy as he tried to defend Kattegat from Ivar and Prince Oleg’s (Danila Kozlovsky) forces.

If Vikings creator and showrunner, Michael Hirst, decides to stick to the history books, Bjorn Ironside should recover from his injuries.

Ever since the jaw-dropping twist, Viking fans have been sharing their theories on Bjorn’s fate online

Fans have also been sceptical over whether Ivar really did kill Bjorn.

One fan tweeted: “I hope from the bottom of my heart that Bjorn is not dead like in real life history he lived and died of old age as a king, why go around and kill him in such a lame easy way, and why is he so unlucky, nothing goes his way ever... King Bjorn Ironside forever #Vikings6.”

A second fan said: “I don't want to believe he his dead though. He shouldn't go out like that. Lost his son, lost his mother, lost the elections for the crown of Norway. Like how can a whole Bjorn Ironside fizzle out like that.”

A third fan commented: “#Vikings6 Bjorn Ironside is not dead.............. In the last season, the seer told his name would be greater than Ragnar ....... But a lot of trials would be coming........ Bjorn ironside will be back.”

Alexander Ludwig, who plays Bjorn, has confirmed his character will appear in the final 10 episodes, but would not confirm whether he is dead or alive.
Speaking to TV Guide, Ludwig said: “Nobody would be expecting that [Bjorn to die], which is why I think it’s a genius move.

“It’s something that I had spoken to [creator Michael Hirst] about in a lot of ways, and I said that I wanted Bjorn to go at the hands of somebody like Ivar.

“If it wasn’t Ivar, then it would have been by his own hand or something so tragic that the audience was just kind of floored by it.

“Because it’s so obvious for Bjorn to finally come up and achieve all this greatness and take his brother down and save the day, and it’s kind of what everybody secretly wants.

“And that’s kind of what I loved about the choice is that he goes — I’ll tell you this though.

“He doesn’t go without a fight. And whether or not he is still alive, you will see a version of Bjorn is some way, shape, or form.”

Hirst also hinted to TV Guide that Bjorn is alive in the final 10 episodes.
He said: “He’s not dead, is he? He’s very, very badly wounded.

“I can’t tell you too much but what I can tell you is the [midseason premiere] is an extraordinary episode and a number of things that you thought were true at the end of [midseason finale] proved not to be quite true.”
